The Department for Business Innovation and Skills (BIS) held its See Inside Manufacturing (SIM) programme during October 2013 and once again invited businesses from the food and drink manufacturing sector to take part.

What is the programme?

See Inside Manufacturing (SIM) is a partnership between BIS and the manufacturing Industry to transform the
perception of manufacturing to students across the country.

SIM was launched in June 2011 and was piloted with the automotive sector. The
SIM 2012 programme was once again run but this time aerospace and food & drink
sectors as well the automative sector were involved. It successfully reached
out
to 4500 people with some of the most successful household names getting
involved.

Why are companies involved?

SIM is an effective initiative as it enables manufacturers to engage with
students, teachers and career advisors more closely. It also:

  • Raises the profile of the food and drink manufacturing sector through showcasing – particularly on a national level.
  • Is open to all sizes and types of companies – flexibility is a key part of the programme in that any company can get
involved with as big or small an event as they want.
  • Enhances existing engagement with local community – including schools, colleges, and Universities – to inspire future generations
    of food scientists and engineers.
  • Is an excellent opportunity for apprentices to develop as they inform younger people about their jobs and in turn has a positive impact on staff who enjoy being involved.
  • Provides good publicity for the companies involved, and builds upon existing engagement programmes that
    may already be in place.
  • Helps to challenge the image of British manufacturing
  • Provides an opportunity for possible Ministerial involvement.
